Gayatri Committee Process Nears Final Stage; ATR to Be Handled After Cabinet Meeting, RTI Hearing Reveals
The government process concerning the Gayatri Committee Report on granting Tulu additional official-language status in Karnataka appears to have reached an important stage, with the report-related process described as being near its final stage of preparation.
The development emerged during a First Appeal hearing under the Right to Information Act held on September 10, 2026, concerning an RTI application seeking information relating to the Gayatri Committee Report.
During the hearing, the appellant was informed that the report has not yet been released, while the preparation process is understood to be at its final or concluding stage. The authority also indicated that the Action Taken Report (ATR) would be handled after the upcoming Karnataka Cabinet meeting.
From “Under Consideration” to the Final Stage
The original RTI application was submitted on April 30, 2026, seeking information concerning the Gayatri Committee Report.
In its response dated June 18, 2026 (Ref: KND/ADM/RTI/2026), signed by Under Secretary Subhashini K.M., the Kannada and Culture Department stated that the requested information concerned a report that was still under government consideration and that no final decision had been taken.
While the report remains unreleased, the information provided during the September 10 hearing indicates that the preparation process is now approaching completion and that further handling of the ATR is expected after the Cabinet meeting.
ATR Expected After September 18 Cabinet Meeting
One of the most significant developments from the hearing was the indication that the Action Taken Report would be handled after the Karnataka Cabinet meeting scheduled in Mangaluru on September 18, 2026.
